SHERIFF JAMES A. PERELMAN
Sheriff James A. Perelman is serving his third term as Sheriff for Nantucket County. He was elected in November of 2010, and sworn into office on January 3, 2023.
Sheriff Perelman has been a year round resident of Nantucket since 1970. He fell in love with the Island and the close knit community that it has. He donates much of his time to charitable events such as the Cure for Cancer, The Autism Walk, Nantucket Aids Network, Palliative Care of Nantucket, Fairwinds Counseling Center, A Safe Place and the Nantucket Boys and Girls Club.
Sheriff Perelman was a Nantucket Court Officer for 5 ½ years and has been an election worker for the last seventeen years. He has been a member of the Rotary Club since 1981.
The Nantucket Sheriff’s Office has changed dramatically since January of 2010, when the Commonwealth of Massachusetts assumed funding obligation for the seven Sheriffs serving in the remaining county governments.
Sheriff Perelman maintains a close partnership with the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office which, by contract, provides incarceration for persons arrested and sentenced from the Nantucket District or Superior Court.
